Our thanks go out to the Anglican Foundation for their generous support of our new roof project. Our hall, built in the 1920s, has enabled us to serve our community in a wide variety of ways for all these decades. From our daycare and food ministry gatherings, to community and private events, to providing meeting space for many non-profit service and addiction groups, the St. Barnabas Hall is a much loved fixture of the Brow of the Hill neighbourhood in New Westminster. Now the rain will be kept out and our hall can continue to be the hub that many enjoy.

Beloved Friends, Sacred Singing Circle is two years old! This is a significant milestone for us as a community and we want you to celebrate with us. We have invited Paul Vasile, from Music that Makes Community and long time friend of our singing circle to join us and to share some songs with us. We are eager to welcome him.This month’s Circle will give us space to reminisce about the past two years of singing, praying and breaking bread as well as to dream about the future of this community. The theme is looking forward, looking back. We will gather on Zoom at 2:00 pm this Sunday, January 31st. We invite you to bring a special birthday/celebratory treat for yourself or for those who want an extra taste of the usual Sacred Singing Circle, below you will find Emilie’s delicious bread recipe. I hope you can join us on Sunday for some connection through song and silence. The Sacred Singing Circle is a gathering open to all people. It will be a chance to connect with our deepest selves, with our circles of community, and with the Divine who has no name. Sunday, January 31st 2:00 pm. Beloved parishioners, friends in Christ,

I am sorry to announce that we will be suspending the celebration of the Eucharist in our church site for the next two weeks, and maybe more. This is because of the rapid increase in Covid–19 cases in the metro Vancouver region. We don’t wish to take any risks with our parishioners. Dr. Bonnie Henry has advised a two week pause in how we do things, in order to stem the rate of infections, and I, in discussions with your church leaders, feel like we have to do our part. It has been so lovely to see one another again, even occasionally for the past few months, but let’s take this pause and rest and reflect. We know that the first disciples faced every kind of challenge and difficulty. We can do this. It is hard and sad and lonely. I miss seeing you all. I miss giving you hugs. I miss laughing and chatting, and sharing coffee hour and all of the rest. I miss singing. 

But remember — we were made for these times. Our faith tells us that we will never be left alone, we belong to the One God who made us and who loves us every day of our lives.

We will be recording a reduced service both weeks, and posting it for all to see. Please catch the service.

If any one has any kind of need, if you are lonely, or having a particularly hard time — or even if you just want to chat — PLEASE PHONE ME! Sometimes people say they’re sorry to bother me, when we spend a bit of time together. Are you kidding? There is nothing that matters more to me than staying connected. WHAT IS STEWARDSHIP?

Hi Friends,

These have been challenging and confusing days, but it has been good to connect with one another, in any old way possible, and to remember how much love there is in our community at St. Barnabas.

Our Church Committee works hard to keep this beautiful church going: we remind one another often – We are Christ’s heart and Christ’s hand in this corner of creation. So what are we going to do?

If all of creation belongs to God, if everything on earth is God’s, then we are called to be stewards of this precious place. To be a steward is to be a trusted servant.

Specifically here at St. Barnabas – what has God entrusted to us? And how can we acknowledge this by our generous giving?

Our church depends on its members to support our many projects, our life in community, our buildings, our priest, everything that we do depends on YOU!

So that is why this year we are asking you to let us know (confidentially) how much support we can count on, as we build our annual budget for 2021.

Thank so much for your generosity, and your love.

HOW TO GIVE?

Envelope giving:  This is the traditional way of donating. Maureen Shirley is our envelope secretary, and she will be handing out boxes of envelopes this month. You can give your donation as often as you wish, in the basket at the entranceway to church.

Donate by e-transfer: You can make a donation directly to our bank through an e-transfer. We will track your donation, and provide you with a tax receipt at year end. More information: http://stbarnabasparish.ca/make-a-donation/

Automatic withdrawal or credit card payments: This is an easy way of regular giving. We can set you up with an automatic withdrawal or credit card payment. If you wish to give a regular donation this way, please see Martha or Emilie to set it up.

We will be organizing a special fundraising campaign for our redevelopment project in January. This will be your opportunity to share in this exciting time in our parish.

Beloved Friends,

We are back! Slowly, slowly, as the church and provincial leadership allows, we will be opening up the church for worship on Sunday mornings.

We will be practicing all safety measures strictly, including sanitization and physical distancing. The wearing of masks is strongly encouraged, but not mandatory. In order to have everyone fit safely in church we have split the congregation into two groups, A and B. And we will be inviting you to come every other week. We will let you know if you are in group A or B. (After a month or so we may mix up the groups, so we can see other parishioners – kind of like five-minute dating!).

Please remember that all services will continue to be recorded and will be posted on our Facebook page, on our website, www.stbarnabasparish.ca, and on our YouTube channel.

Here are the Sundays each group can attend (through to August 23rd):

So this is what to expect:

• You will receive a phone call and an email inviting you to church on alternate Sundays.
• We will be celebrating Morning Prayer, until the Diocese gives us permission to have Eucharist.
• Sadly, no singing in church for a while.
• We will joyously celebrate our community life and faith together with music, prayer, scripture, silence and reflection on God’s word.
• We won’t be congregating in clumps of people: no exchange of Peace, no coffee hour, no chatting at the church door. We will be welcoming families, or people who have already expanded their “bubble” to sit together.
• Hand sanitizer and masks will be available at the church door.
• The collection plate will be at the entryway to church to receive your gifts.
• We will continue to pray for the whole world as we struggle to be safe and stay connected during this pandemic.
• The MOST important thing of all is staying safe. The next most important thing is to stay connected. Every single member of our congregation, from oldest to youngest, from every tradition and history is part of our great big family. This is a time for compassion and patience.
• Thanks to the church leaders who have kept St. Barnabas going, for these many, many decades, since 1891. We are a strong group, and we are known for our loving kindness visible to all. Let’s continue to show that!
